Windows Server 2022 Install

Right, so I am upgrading our systems to Server 2022, with Server 2012 support ending.

The first thing you want to check is what the core server OS version is. This is easy, just run systeminfo from the command line. Here you will find all the information you need including the OS version.

The actual server install is pretty similar.

Create your VM Machine and VM Hard drive folders, and run the installer. No drama’s yet!

Ideally you want to create the correct drive size when initially installing, then partition during the install. (Use custom install and create the partitions there)

If however you need to add a ‘D’ drive later, you can edit the disk you have already created in the VM settings (right click > settings) then use computer management to format and assign the drive letter. The second option is a bit clunky which is why the first option is better.

The installation seems to be nice and fast. Once you have the server installed, you can add various roles and features. Below is a breakdown of what I have worked on.

File Server
  1. The file server role is automatically installed with the OS but I had to add a second drive to the default install.
  2. Ideally you want to first create the full hard drive then partition in later when you install the OS assuming you want to store the files on the ‘D’ drive
